There’s one part of every adventure nobody looks forward to: THE HAUL. Usually you try to drag your coolers, chairs, and bags from car to campsite in one back-breaking trip. It’s the adventure tax on fun. So when NAVEE offered to send us their E-Wagon 4X to test, the first thing we wanted to know was: does it actually make the haul easier, or is it just another thing to lug around?

What Is the NAVEE E-Wagon 4X?

The NAVEE E-Wagon 4X is a motorized, foldable cart used to haul or ride with a load pretty much anywhere you can think of.

NAVEE E-Wagon 4X Specs

It features a 3000W motor with independent 4-wheel drive, giving you the power to cart a max payload of 771 lbs (349 kg). The max load on this puppy is a static 1,300 lbs – that’s some serious weight. At a 50% inclination, the max carry load is 220 lbs (99 kg). 

• E-Wagon capacity is 183L (6.5 cu ft)
• Dimensions of 45.7” x 24.8” x 23.6”; folds to 11.4” x 18.9” x 31.5”
• Water rating for the 4X wagon is IPX5 (light power washing, light rain)

Frame, Wheels & Brake System

Worried about the wagon’s quality? Don’t be – the frame and supports are made from aerospace aluminum, carbon steel and stainless steel, which is how it can take the weight and not buckle under pressure.

The utility cart also features Ackermann steering, which is the geometry that lets all four wheels turn at the right angles so it corners smoothly without scrubbing. With 6.5” wide anti-slip tank wheels, it allows you to take the E-Wagon on every type of outdoor terrain, including asphalt, gravel, mud, sand, grass, etc. The wheels are solid – no flats and no pressure to maintain; as hunters, off-roaders and campers, this is music to our ears. It also has a triple braking system – a parking lock to prevent rollaways, an electromagnetic front brake that automatically slows you down on hills, and rear drum brakes that are the same enclosed, low-maintenance braking system used on cars.

Speed, Charging & Battery

As per NAVEE, the top speed for the E-Wagon 4X is 16 km/h (10 mph); however, as a ride-on, we were able to get 18 to 19 km consistently. I’m sure there is a speed limiter for safety reasons. Ride the wagon downhill, and the hill descent control/braking system will automatically slow you down. Tired of throttling? Let the cruise control take over. In ride mode, you can cruise up to 16 km/h (10 mph) and in tow mode, there are 3 preset speeds – it’ll even cruise uphill at 9 km/h (6 mph).

Let’s talk battery – it’s a beefy 36V 12Ah detachable lithium battery with a 432Wh capacity. Charging from empty is 4.5 to 5 hours; that’s outdoors – NAVEE says 4 hours, but they’re charging at room temp. On a full charge, depending on weight, terrain and usage, you’ll get anywhere from an hour to a full day of use. After a rainy day, on a hilly country road with a few steep inclines, running 300 lbs, we drove 4.3 km on a full charge. Dry conditions, mixed weights in one trip (95 lbs to 285 lbs), and a gravelled hilly terrain got us 10 km before the battery emptied. Bonus battery feature: it can charge your devices via USB.

Display & Steering Column

The full-colour display is a 2.4in TFT with a 320 x 240 resolution. On the screen you’ll see your current trip meter, odometer, temperature, battery percentage (SOC), speed, and active axle/wheel engagement drive mode (4WD H, 4WD L, FWD, RWD, Smart Towing, Hill Descent Control, Cruise Control). 

NAVEE’s steering column is height-adjustable for riding – unclip the steering setup, and it now becomes your tow handle. On-screen information flips for easy reading, and both thumb controls convert to power-assist (throttle). In riding mode, the right control is throttle; the left, brake. On both sides of the screen, you have buttons: top left – scroll through drive modes, bottom left – power on/off the LED wagon light, top right – power button, and bottom right – reverse driving mode. I almost forgot to mention – the unit speaks to you.

Setup & First Impressions of the NAVEE E-Wagon Cart

We were super excited to receive the electric wagon and praying it wasn’t some cheap, gimmicky cart that overpromised and underdelivered. Out of the box, it looked solid, and it was heavy (72.5 lbs / 33 kg). That’s some serious weight for a wagon. Nothing about it looks inexpensive – I would say it’s quite the opposite – it looks sleek and luxurious!

Moving on to assembly – guys, you know this to be true – you love toys, but hate reading manuals! Stelios is no different. He thought he could muscle his way through, but nope, the E-Wagon has a few little secrets – one, it has a magnet that holds it together; two, it likes to be unfolded in a certain manner; and three, those long arms are the support bars for the top of the wagon and not some weird downward rod system. I have to give him credit; he tried all while filming an unboxing video. You and I both know most people would have done the same goofs. Assembly is quick for manual readers. For Stelios, it took 30 minutes; most of it was cutting off protective plastic.

Being new, the wagon is stiff and sliding in the battery takes a little wrestling, which is great – it means it won’t fly off when rumbling down a bumpy road or trail. With the battery settled in, the wagon was then ready to be powered up. A nice English lady parrots to depress the brake and power button to operate – after figuring out what she meant, Stelios turned into a massive toddler and drove off – and that’s the last time we saw him – just joking, he eventually came back!

Bottom line – the NAVEE is a blast just as a ride-on alone. Hauling gear in this wagon makes life easier, riding through the forest is thrilling!

Testing the NAVEE Electric Wagon/Cart

Truthfully, testing the electric cart was difficult – we had so many downpours! We took advantage of the few moments when it would stop raining, only to take the utility cart out and try to dodge the deeper puddles. 

As of writing, we have driven/hauled 83 km (51 miles) on this electronic cart on quiet country roads, hilly fire routes, rough ground, even ditches. For the record, ditch-banging wasn’t my idea, nor is two-wheeling, but the wagon handled both beautifully. Whatever you’re not supposed to do with it was done and the wagon survived it gracefully! No broken wheels, the frame is still straight, fabric is intact, and the display and voice still work. 

Adults & E-Wagons

I’m sure you’re wondering if the wagon can carry an adult comfortably. Yes, it can – as a rider sitting on the bench and a passenger sitting in the wagon – legs hanging out sideways so you’re not crushing the back fabric wall. Taller people will have an easier time getting on; for shorter ones, pull the steering column down and plop yourself down on the bench from the front. Once you’re seated, there are foot pedals; the left one is your parking brake. My mom, a short senior, was able to get on and had no problems operating the cart – she found it responsive and loved the way it handled. She was sold after one use!

In-Use Battery Life

Battery life on the NAVEE E-Wagon depends on what you’re hauling and how you are using it. As mentioned earlier, we rode this cart hard on all kinds of hill sizes and terrain. We’d get a full hour on wet, cold terrain days with an adult and child riding, to a full day’s use hauling lighter loads, taking breaks, and letting a child ride the cart on warmer, dry days. The harder and heavier your load, the faster the battery drains. It also depends on the drive mode you select – 4WD H will drain the battery faster, but it’s what’s needed to tackle more challenging terrain. 4WD L mode preserves your battery and is better used for lighter loads and easier roads.

Performance

It’s what matters most! The power to haul a load is there; whether it’s uphill or downhill, the cart delivers. We pushed through NAVEE’s max incline load of 220 lbs to 250 and squeaked right up the hill, ever so slowly. Hunters and photographers will be happy to hear that the cart’s motor is whisper-quiet. As to handling, the steering is responsive and easy to use. Pop it up on two wheels while riding, and it handles turns and straight lines beautifully. 

Braking is instantaneous when using the thumb control. The wagon auto-brakes down steeper hills and won’t let you past 19 km ( 20 km with heavy loads). Thank goodness, that’s my failsafe against the kids who are trying to push it past its limits. When in towing mode, I’ve had a couple of times where the wagon ran into me when I stopped walking suddenly and let go of the throttle. The electronic utility cart has a feature where you can choose a pace to fit your natural walking stride, and it will roll beside you. This function has a total transformer vibe to it – you’re just waiting for it to transform. 🙂

Is the Tech Difficult to Use?

If you don’t read the manual, it can be confusing, but after some trial and error, you quickly get the idea and are pleasantly surprised when a new feature pops up. For example, I did not realize it could do cruise control while you’re riding, nor did I know it could roll itself. My little one figured that one out and freaked out our camping neighbours when they saw something moving at night with a light on – which gave an incredible idea for Halloween!

Minor Annoyances

With medium-sized hands, I find throttling in tow mode to be tiresome. I wish NAVEE could find a way to incorporate an adjustable throttle as they do on bicycles and dirt bikes. Stelios, with larger hands, has no problems throttling. A complaint Stelios had was that he wished it could match your pace in tow mode when you’re using the steering handle to haul. My other complaint would be that it doesn’t stop rolling when you stop walking in tow mode – you really have to be mindful of not stopping in front of the cart; otherwise your heels will not be happy.

What Others Think of the NAVEE 4X Motorized Wagon

Haha, some people are super funny when they see you rolling by. You’ll have people giving you the thumbs up, cutting off traffic to ask you about it, and staring in disbelief that technology has made it into a cart – who would have thought!

The most priceless comment was when Stelios went RVing, and one of the RVers was trying to figure out what happened to him. They saw him coming down the road and thought he was in a wheelchair! For the life of her, she couldn’t figure out what had happened in the one day, until he drove by her and she fell on the ground laughing.

A passerby commented that he would never leave the grocery store if he had one of these. Someone else said they would use the electric wagon to carry their goods to a flea market booth, making life so much easier.

And my favourite was when we drove into a provincial park, stopped to read the map, and a park officer cut off traffic to talk to us. We froze, thinking, oh no, are we not allowed to ride a wagon in the park? No, that wasn’t the case – he was fascinated that my mom was riding the wagon with my child in it and so wanted to try, but the traffic wouldn’t let him.

So, all in all, the E-Wagon turns heads, piques interest, and if you have no friends, this is one way of making them or avoiding the ones you already have. 😉

Who’s It For?

Everybody! Well, maybe not for someone who has a difficult time lifting – the cart is heavy, so a senior might have a hard time with this one, unless you leave it set up and are using it from home, cottage, or cabin to get to your destination. Otherwise, it’s perfect for:

Let’s address the elephant in the room – at $2,909 CAD ($2,100 USD), the NAVEE E-Wagon 4X isn’t an impulse buy. But it’s worth looking at what you’re actually paying for before writing it off as pricey.

This isn’t a $150 folding wagon you’ll replace in two summers when the fabric tears and a wheel seizes.
