YETI Performance Apparel: Jackets, Fleece & Merino Compared

I’ve got a Canada Goose thatโ€™s cold as heck, Stelios has a rain jacket that makes you look like you stepped out of the shower, and we all have jackets that promise you can layer, only to find you can wear a T-shirt or a long sleeve, but nothing with bulk. YETI just entered the performance apparel market with a new line of jackets, fleece and pullovers all promising to fix exactly that.

Launching US-only for now – weโ€™ll update when it crosses the border.

YETI Performance Apparel Made for Comfort and the Elements

If youโ€™ve ever gone hiking, fishing, cross-country skiing, or on a country drive in a big, bulky jacket, you know how restrictive jackets can get. Your motion is limited, which affects your casting abilities; you overheat within minutes on a hike, and it spoils your mood as youโ€™re constantly fighting your jacket. YETI releases the Tensleep Hybrid Down Jacket – designed to keep you comfortable while doing what you love most.

Tensleep Hybrid Hooded Down Jacket: Midweight Warmth

YETI made the Tensleep Down Jacket as a hybrid, meaning it uses two types of fill: the ExpeDry certified down for warmth and traceable Lavalan wool to control moisture, smell, and heat. With midweight insulation, itโ€™s designed to keep you warm and dry quickly. The exterior fabric is stretchy by design, allowing for better movement and comfort. It also features an adjustable hem, insulated hood, and YKK zippers.

If you need a jacket for light rain and light snow, the YETI Tensleep might be for you. What itโ€™s not is a rain jacket; itโ€™s not meant for the heavy stuff. Iโ€™ll give YETI credit; the jacket does look sleek!

YETI Tensleep Price, Availability & Colours

YETIโ€™s Tensleep Down Jacket has a premium price tag of $400 US and is only available in the US. The Tensleep Hybrid Jacket comes in both menโ€™s and womenโ€™s sizing. For men, your colour choices would be black or deep green. For women, the choices are black or desert blue.

Tilloo Hooded Rain Jacket: Made for the Heavy Rains

The Tilloo rain jacket reminds me of Steliosโ€™ Western Rise jacket. The soft shell gives the jacket a nice polished look, and the nylon material doesnโ€™t wear like a stiff, noisy rain jacket. Nothing worse than hearing yourself swoosh down quiet trails. Actually, there is: itโ€™s when you start sweating in your raincoat, and it sticks to you.

YETI Rain Jacketโ€™s Class-Leading Specs

YETI designed a rain jacket with a 40,000 mm waterproof rating and a 45,000 g/mยฒ/24hr breathability rating – thatโ€™s unheard of. On average, premium shells run 20,000 mm and 15,000 to 25,000 in breathability. It uses a 3-layer construction (stretch ripstop nylon exterior, membrane, and soft lining) designed for heavy rain protection while keeping you feeling dry and quiet. The seams are fully taped, and the zipper features AquaGuard protection to keep water out.

If youโ€™re looking for a raincoat that leaves you feeling comfortable, protects you from the elements, and performs in the woods, lake, or casual dining, then the Tilloo Hooded Rain Jacket is worth considering.

YETI Tilloo Jacket Price, Availability & Colours

YETIโ€™s serious rain protection is not available in Canada yet, only in the US. Pricing for YETIโ€™s Tilloo packable rain jacket is $350 – thatโ€™s premium weatherproof protection. As for colours, womenโ€™s Tilloo is available in black and pinyon blue and menโ€™s in black and dusk blue.

Sansaba Fleece 260 Full-Zip Jacket for Daily Wear

A good, quality fleece is such a versatile piece of clothing for the outdoors. You can wear it on its own during the in-between months or under a winter coat for that added warmth. A fleece is what gets me through those cold winter hikes. Itโ€™s also my go-to on the cooler evenings of our camping trips.

What Makes the Sansaba Fleece Special?

The big feature on the Sansaba is that itโ€™s made from 100% post-consumer recycled materials – YETI calls it the 260 GSM PrimaLoft Bio. The technical fleece is designed to keep you warm and dry no matter the activity level. The fabric is also stretchy, allowing you to move freely.

YETI Sansaba Fleece Price, Availability & Colours

YETIโ€™s performance fleece comes in black and deep green for men and black and putty for women. Personally, I think putty colour looks very classy. Itโ€™s actually decently priced at $180 US for a technical shell – a Patagonia Better Sweater Fleece is $19 more in Canada. Again, the Sanaba is not available in Canada yet, only in the US.

Hueco Merino 310 Full-Zip and Caprock Merino 250 Quarter-Zip for Added Warmth

Anything Merino is usually a godsend on cold days when youโ€™re not in the mood for several layers. When we go snowmobiling, we wear our Merino baselayers and the FXR F.A.S.T. snowmobile suit – and thatโ€™s pretty much it. It keeps us comfortably warm no matter the outside temperature. We swear by Merino.

Hueco, the Heavyweight. Caprock the Midweight.

Sounds like a boxing match in the making ๐Ÿ˜‰ All kidding aside, the feature that caught my eye with the Hueco Full-Zip is the chafe-free seams. If anything is an irritant, itโ€™s skin being rubbed raw. Happy to hear this may be resolved with YETIโ€™s Hueco. Both the Hueco and Caprock are made with merino wool and enhanced with Nuyarn Tech, which basically means YETI designed these two pieces to be warm, durable, and breathable.

The difference: Hueco is meant for cold, gusty days and the Caprock is for all four seasons. Caprock is a waffle knit, which traps warm air when you need it and lets heat and moisture escape when you donโ€™t.

If youโ€™re looking for natural protection against the cold this winter, YETIโ€™s soft and stretchy Hueco or Caplock may be your perfect match.

YETI Merino Price, Availability & Colours

YETIโ€™s Merino warming layers are not available in Canada, only in the US. For colours, womenโ€™s Hueco is available in black and pinyon blue; Caplock in black and putty. For men, the Hueco comes in black and dusk blue, and the Caplock in black and deep green. The Hueco Full-Zip at $280 and the Caplock Quarter-Zip at $200 are priced at a premium.

Our Take

Weโ€™re not buying one yet – and not over the price. YETIโ€™s coolers earned their premium, and weโ€™ve said so. But apparel is a different story than a cooler. A cooler either holds ice or it doesnโ€™t; you know within one weekend. A jacket has to survive seasons of zippers, seams, washes and abrasion before anyone can honestly say itโ€™s worth $400. YETI has a long track record with hard goods and none with clothing.

So: if you already own YETIโ€™s hoodies and theyโ€™ve held up for you, this is a reasonable bet. If youโ€™re replacing a jacket anyway and the 3-year warranty matters, itโ€™s worth a look. If youโ€™re buying it because it says YETI on the chest, give it a season – we are.
