Caperlan Fishing Backpack Features

Material

The Caperlan 20L fishing tackle bag is made from 1000-denier PVC tarpaulin, which is puncture-resistant. It's a strong material that is flexible and tough, yet the Caperlan fishing backpack stays lightweight. I've trudged through thick brush, thrown this fishing pack into boats, on the ice, and yet, it's remained strong with no tears or punctures, even in the roughest of outdoor conditions.

Waterproof Build

Not a fan of getting your gear wet? Neither am I, unless of course, it's designed to. Decathlon's Caperlan fishing backpack is waterproof up to a certain point. Being made from waterproof tarpaulin fabric allows moisture to stay out. The zippers are coated to do the same, which lets you wade through streams and get caught in the rain.

Nonetheless, after being caught in a sudden downpour while fishing, I did notice a few droplets inside the pack, which came through the top of the zipper's seam. This explains why Decathlon doesn't recommend submerging the pack entirely. The 20L Caperlan pack can sit in water up to 5 inches (15 cm) deep, keeping your gear safe and dry. I haven't had any issues in light rain or from fly fishing in the river.

In this price category, it's hard to find many options in fully submersible backpacks. Unless you're planning to fish in deep waters with your pack floating beside you, there’s no need to spend a fortune on one. The waterproof Caperlan fishing backpack has the right amount of waterproofing for most fishing adventures.

Capacity & Fishing Gear Organization

So, how much can the 20L Caperlan fishing backpack actually hold? The pack itself is very narrow; however, it does have plenty of compartments for lures and other gear you need most. It fits everything you need for a fulfilling day on the water.

Whether I'm ice fishing, fly fishing or fishing off the boat, the Caperlan 20L tackle backpack can hold two large 3700 Plano tackle trays, fishing pliers, gloves, extra fishing line, terminal tackle, a few packs of lures, a license, phone, snacks, and small fishing accessories. Honestly, I didn't think it would all fit, but the pack looks smaller than it is.

The main compartment is narrow, but deep. Inside is a zippered pocket for personal items or for boating/fishing maps that you want to keep dry. The compact Caperlan 20L does not carry large tackle boxes; instead, it features only fishing trays. On the outside of the tackle backpack, you'll find two expandable mesh pockets perfect for a water bottle or quick-access gear, such as a small lure box. The front zippered pocket is ideal for storing smaller items, such as spare lures, gloves, or even a snack when you need a break.

Comfort & Fitment

As a grab-and-go, or even sporting it on your back, I must say that fishing with the Caperlan is comfy. The padded shoulder straps allow for longer days of fly fishing or trekking to a remote spot. The Caperlan's back panel is a breathable, padded mesh, designed to wick away sweat all while keeping you comfortable and cool throughout your fishing adventure.

Customizing the fit is easy with adjustable shoulder and chest straps. After a minor adjustment, the fishing dry backpack sits comfortably on my back and is not a bother when fishing for long periods of time.

Extra Features

What's really cool is that pro anglers designed the Decathlon Caperlan 20L backpack, ensuring features that make fishing more convenient.

Case in point, the Caperlan fishing backpack rod holder - not one, but two! Use the side hooks to secure your rod and a spare for yourself or a friend. Found at the top of the pack is a rear loop for a fishing net. The shoulder strap features a pocket for your fishing pliers and a hook for your most-used fishing accessory.

Located on the Caperlan shoulder straps are small loops where you can attach smaller accessories such as a whistle, multi-tool, lanyard, or even a small tackle box full of flies. I recommend adding some carabiners for quick access. The zipper pulls feature large finger loops for easier opening and closure.

I have to say, these guys thought of everything! The features are practical and thought out. I always despised paying for backpacks that look fancy, cost a fortune, and, in return, you get an empty void with no real purpose. Backpacks are supposed to keep you organized! The fish will not wait for you to finish rummaging through your pack for bait or a hook. 😉

Caperlan Fishing Backpack Performance

The Caperlan fishing pack doubles as a waterproof utility backpack on a short canoe paddle.

Being a budget-friendly pack, the Caperlan backpack left me impressed. Do I wish it were a little wider, yes, but other than that, I have no complaints. Wherever our fishing trips take us, whether it be bank fishing, ice fishing or standing in a stream, the 20L Caperlan has delivered.

From sunny days to light rain, the gear stays dry, the shoulders don't ache from the weight of the gear, and the lower back stays comfortably dry thanks to the breathable back panel.

I keep my fishing lures in the front zippered pocket, which makes bait retrieval quick and easy. Having the pliers sit off the shoulder came in handy for removing hooked fish. Having two extra rod holders is a plus when targeting different fish species or lending a rod to a friend, who apparently doesn't like to bring their own things.

The Caperlan waterproof backpack handles winter easily. My kiddo thought it was a great idea to throw a hand auger onto the pack, which was sitting in a utility sled! Surprisingly, there was no cut in the pack. So, yes, the Caperlan can handle rough outdoor conditions and kids!

Canoeing

I like the Decathlon Caperlan backpack so much that I use it on short canoe paddles. Being 20L, it fits neatly in the bow of the canoe and offers the right amount of waterproof protection. Throw in a towel, a few snacks, a water bottle, bug spray, phone, and you're all set to explore the shores and take a dip or two.

If you want to keep your gear dry, organized and reasonable, the Caperlan Fishing Backpack is for you. This waterproof fishing backpack is an affordable choice for offshore fishing, waterproof storage on a boat, and even fly fishing.

It’s also perfect for short canoeing trips and ice fishing. While it might not have the capacity for long fishing adventures, it’s the ideal size for short excursions and day trips. Decathon's Caperlan 20L backpack works great during the summer fishing season and taking on winter fishing.

Caperlan Fishing Backpack Comparison

Let's compare the Plano and Simms to the Caperlan 20L backpack. In the same price range, the Caperlan 20L offers more compartments for organizing fishing gear. There is the ability to add the Caperlan chest pack, which features additional loops on the shoulder straps for access to small accessories.

In comparison, the Plano Z-Series Waterproof Backpack comes with two tackle trays and a roll-top design. The Simms DryCreek Z Sling is a similar size but costs so much more, offering fewer features and being fully submersible.
