About aZengear

aZengear contacted us about these cool little adhesive patches to repair outdoor gear. Always being skeptical, a quick glance at their site shows that they have been featured by the New York Times, Buzzfeed, Yahoo, Women’s Health and so on. Ok, so you have our attention.

They claim to be about healthy living products where quality meets affordability. All while being sustainable in the process. The patches arrive quickly and in rather nice packaging that’s very becoming of a company based in the UK. Should I even say it’s “posh”?

A bold 60-day warranty statement on the front and neat little instructional drawings on the back. So far, so good! Let’s tear them open and breathe new life into some old gear!

Packaging and Sustainability

aZengear Patch and Pouch Sustainability

After tearing off the top of the little plastic pouch they come in, you’ll find 11 patches of various sizes and shapes. That’s smart as to not hideously over-repair something that may be tiny. Carefully thought out to cover those bigger boo-boos without whipping out a needle and thread. Or worse, duct tape, which goes from hideous to extra hideous when it dries out and falls off, leaving a sticky mess.

What’s cool is you keep the actual package. It’s in a zip lock style format, which holds your aZengear repair patches safe and sound. For all those who are eco-conscious, it’s a step in the right direction.

The product’s packaging is the only packaging! Right off the bat, it’s fair to say it really is more sustainable than most – while remaining useable. If that’s not enough, carbon emissions were measured, reduced and offset on this product from a certified source.

Sizes and Shapes

As mentioned above, one package of aZengear Repair Patches includes 11 self-adhesive gear patches. So, not to lose any of the smaller patches, you will find that the company has left them attached to a larger patch. Smart!

Here is a list of what you will find in the pack:

Available Colours

What’s great about these repair adhesives & patches is that they come in a multitude of colours, everything from pinks and purples to browns, blues and blacks, etc. We opted for more neutral colours like black, light beige, olive and turquoise since most of our outdoor gear is in these colours.

Unfortunately, there is no mixed-colour pack of ordinary colours. Each pouch contains various-sized patches of the chosen colour.

How To Use the aZengear Patches

Applying these outdoor gear patches takes three simple steps.

OK, So What Can You Use These aZengear Patches On?

For starters, anything that is nylon or polyester. These rip-stop nylon patches are tear-resistant and waterproof. They are also resistant to heat and cold, which makes them perfect for outdoor gear and clothing. These patches apply easily to down jackets, technical shells, rain jackets, etc.

Have a tear in an inflatable, no problem? What about a sleeping bag? Or worse, a tent or a leaky airbed? Now, that calls for a sleepless night! Don’t worry – field repairs with the aZengear patch will have you back to sleep in no time.

Applications range from shoes, most bags, RVs, rubber boats, umbrellas, gloves, tarps, clothing, kayaks, SUPs, technical garments, down bags, compression sacks, etc. The list goes on and on!

Adhesive Patches Pricing

The aZengear outdoor gear patches come in at $16.95 (at the time of writing). This is, of course, Canadian pricing. For that, you get 11 patches, which equates to $1.54 per patch. Our lucky American visitors will pay even less, as is always the case.

Price is sometimes a relative issue. For example, buy a car for $25,000 versus $100,000, and you have a quick idea of what to expect. What kills me lately is paying $8 for a head of lettuce that’s gone after 1 meal!!!

So, how do we decide if something like a patch at $1.54 is fair? Look at it this way: you’re camping, and your $100 tarp springs a hole – to top it off, it’s windy outside. Let’s add that it’s the only tarp available to you, and it’s raining.

So, do you risk letting the hole spread and ruin your tarp forever, or do you take the tarp down and live in misery? I like option C: put a $1.54 patch on it and enjoy your adventure! Or, in other words, it’s worth every penny. It’s a quick and simple DIY repair versus calling your adventure off, shipping your gear into repair shops and waiting 3-4 weeks. As a side note, many outdoor brands do offer free repairs.

Do the aZengear Adhesive Patches Actually Work?

Using a light beige aZengear adhesive patch to cover a tear

It’s going to be a short post today. There’s only so much one can write about an adhesive patch:) We also got the enviro bits and price out of the way, which usually goes last. So, let’s get to the juicy part, as we saved the best for last.

Yes, they work! Can we speak in good faith about longevity? Of course not, as only time will tell. For now, it’s working incredibly well! Being exposed to the elements, we even placed a patch on our boat. We will circle back and update the post with our results.

UPDATE: The aZengear patch we placed on our boat in May has been exposed to torrential rains, sun and high temperatures, and surprisingly, it has held up to it all. Good news – there are no signs of peeling or fading!

The Verdict

The repair patch is barely visible from a distance
The repair patch is barely visible from a distance

If you follow the blog, you may have seen one of our best posts, the bugout bag or get home bag. It’s the essential gear we carry on any outing, and that post comes with a survival manual.

In reading it, you would see we always carry a sewing kit and a roll of gorilla tape. But these emergency repair adhesive patches are far more sophisticated than the crude tools we used before. The patches are 100% going into my repair kit! It weighs nothing, so why not?

Let’s refer to another post, tent camping, where we covered our family’s Nemo Aurora tent. It would not be easy to sew that tent when it’s pitched. It’s also a $600+ product, and we wouldn’t want to gorilla tape any boo-boos either. This is where aZengear’s patches really excel! They come in several different colours. Fast, easy to apply, waterproof and the best way to preserve the life of your gear.

Let’s consider one more scenario out of a multitude. If you have kids, you know you’re always buying them clothes. You also know they are quick to come home with the very clothes you just bought them, only to sport some rips or holes – holes that spread faster than Canada’s national debt. So slap a colour-matching patch on it and move on.

There is a practical use at home and in the bush with aZengear’s adhesive repair patches. It’s a more permanent and sophisticated solution to a very holey problem. 😉 Add your’s to your outdoor kit today BEFORE you actually need one!
